Entra Sync
Realsmart connects to your Microsoft 365 (Entra ID) tenant and keeps it lined up with your MIS and Realsmart data. Turning on Entra Sync is entirely self service, and you’re always in control of exactly what gets provisioned. Nothing is switched on until you say so.
Connecting Entra Sync to your tenant
To get going, you’ll enter your tenant ID, client ID, client secret and user principal domain. Then it’s just a case of flipping a self service toggle to switch sync on. You can test the connection first, so you know everything’s working before anything goes live.

Once you’re connected, you choose exactly what gets provisioned to Entra:
- Password updates for existing users
- Group sync, covering the same seven group types as Google Sync: Teachers of, Houses, Registration groups, Role groups, Year groups, Subjects and Groups, all with a live preview so you can see which groups will sync before you commit to anything
- Administrative unit sync
Passwords and naming, your way
You can set default passwords for new mentor and learner accounts, and configure separate prepends for mentor and learner users and groups. This comes in handy if a few schools in your trust share a naming convention, or need to stay distinct from one another.
Built for multi academy trusts
Running several schools on one Microsoft 365 tenant? Give each school its own subdomain, and roll your Entra Sync settings out across the whole trust in a single action, rather than school by school.
Email addresses and single sign on
You can give your Entra groups email addresses on your own domain, through an Exchange Online app registration, and offer staff and students single sign on to Microsoft 365 with SmartLogin, our federated SSO that matches accounts using immutable IDs. SmartLogin is a more advanced, guided setup that we complete together with you once sync is connected.

Getting started with Entra Sync
To connect Entra Sync, you’ll need a Microsoft 365 admin to create an app registration and grant admin consent for the Graph API permissions we use. Your user principal domain will also need to be verified with Microsoft, per subdomain if you’re a trust. Group email on your own domain needs a separate, certificate based Exchange Online app registration, and SmartLogin SSO is set up as a guided project with our team once sync is connected. We’ll walk you through all of it.
